AI Citations Are the New Page One: How to Get Quoted by ChatGPT, Perplexity, and AI Overviews

Someone with a real problem opens ChatGPT and types a question your business could answer. The model responds in four paragraphs, names three companies, and links two of them. Your prospect never scrolls a list of ten blue links. There is no page one to win.

That is the shift. Search did not disappear, but the position that matters moved. Ranking first for a keyword still has value. Getting named inside the answer has more.

What an AI Citation Actually Is

An AI citation is a mention of your brand, your domain, or your content inside a generated answer. Sometimes it arrives as a linked source. Sometimes your company is simply named in a list of options with no link at all. Both count, and the unlinked mention is often worth more, because it reaches the user as a recommendation rather than a search result.

Three things separate a citation from a ranking:

    • It is a recommendation, not a listing. The model is vouching for you, not indexing you.
    • It has no position. You are either in the answer or you are invisible.
    • It compounds. A model that cites you on one question tends to cite you on adjacent ones.

Share of Voice Replaced Rank Tracking

Rank tracking asks where you sit for a keyword. AI share of voice asks a better question. Across every conversation happening about your category, how often does your brand come up compared to everyone else?

Here is our own scoreboard, measured across ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Copilot, Google AI Mode, and Grok over the last ninety days.

    • 14,435 total citations across the queries we track
    • 3,918 of them point to spinflow.ai
    • 51 percent share of voice
    • Nearest competing product domain: 622 mentions

The three domains sitting above every actual competitor are not competitors at all. YouTube, Reddit, and LinkedIn account for roughly 4,300 citations combined. Models lean hard on places where humans talk to each other about products. That tells you exactly where the next lift comes from, and it is not another keyword page.

Key insight: AI models do not cite the best optimized page. They cite the clearest source of a specific claim. Own a claim and you own the citation.

    What Models Actually Pull From

Every major AI search system does some version of the same thing. It reformulates the question, retrieves a set of candidate sources, and synthesizes an answer from the passages it trusts most. Winning that process comes down to four things.

    • Extractable answers. A passage that answers the question in two or three sentences, near a heading that matches the question, gets pulled. A 400-word windup does not.
    • First-party data. Numbers only you can publish are the single strongest citation magnet, because no other source can supply them.
    • Entity clarity. The model needs to know what your company is, what category it belongs to, and what it does. Vague positioning produces zero citations.
    • Corroboration. Being described the same way across your own site, third party mentions, and community discussion raises confidence enough for the model to name you.

The On-Page Work That Earns Citations

None of this requires a new vendor. It is structural work on the pages you already have.

    • Answer-first formatting. Lead each section with the direct answer, then explain. Write headings as the questions people actually ask.
    • Structured data. Organization, Article, FAQPage, and Product schema tell a model what an entity is instead of making it guess from prose.
    • An llms.txt file. A plain text map at your root that tells AI crawlers what your site covers and which pages are canonical for which topic.
    • Publishable statistics. Take the numbers your business already generates, clean them, and publish them with a clear methodology line.
    • Comparison tables. Models pull structured comparisons constantly, because the underlying question is almost always some version of which one should I pick.

This is the same architecture argument we make about website architecture and SEO performance. A platform you control can ship schema, server-rendered content, and structured answers on demand. A locked-down site builder cannot, which is why so many brands are invisible to AI search without understanding why.

What We Measure Instead of Rankings

Rank position is still on the dashboard, but it is no longer the headline. Four numbers matter more.

    • Share of voice. Your mentions as a percentage of all mentions across tracked queries.
    • Citation count by platform. ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Gemini pull differently. A gap on one platform is a specific, fixable problem.
    • Sentiment. Being named as the expensive option is not the same win as being named as the obvious one.
    • Cited URL depth. If every citation points at your homepage, your content is not doing the work.

    Where to Start

Pick the ten questions a good prospect asks before they buy. Run each one through ChatGPT and Perplexity yourself and write down who gets named. That list is your real competitive set, and it is usually not the one on your slide deck.

Then fix the three pages closest to those questions. Answer-first structure, schema, one statistic nobody else can publish. Measure again in thirty days. Citations move considerably faster than rankings ever did, which is the best news in search since organic traffic started sliding.
