Ascend Surgical Alliance
A referral-grade surgical practice site built to earn trust before the first call

Ascend Surgical Alliance is a metabolic health and anti-reflux surgical practice in Colorado. SpinFlow built the practice a custom server-rendered website that speaks to patients and referring physicians on separate paths, without a template and without a page builder.
A surgeon's website has about four seconds to answer one question. Can I trust this person with my body. Templates cannot answer that. They flatten a specialist practice into the same layout as every other clinic in the metro, and they bury the two audiences that matter, patients and referring providers, in the same undifferentiated navigation.
The brief
What the engagement had to deliver
Ascend Surgical Alliance came to us with a clear set of outcomes rather than a page count. Everything below was agreed before design started.
- Give a specialist surgical practice a site that reads as credible to both patients and referring physicians
- Separate the patient journey from the provider referral journey without doubling the navigation
- Present metabolic surgery, reflux care, endoscopic procedures, and robotic surgery as distinct services rather than one blurred list
- Build on a foundation that renders fully for search engines and answer engines on first request
- Ship without a database, keeping the practice free of software the staff would have to learn
Key challenges
What made this build harder than a template
- Two audiences with opposite needs. Patients want reassurance and plain language. Referring physicians want credentials, procedure specifics, and a fast referral path
- Medical content has to be precise without becoming clinical wallpaper that no patient reads
- A single-surgeon practice has to look established without overclaiming
- Practice details including the address and phone were still being finalized during the build, so the site had to ship without fake placeholder data anywhere
Our approach
How we built it
We built the design system before we built a single page. The palette runs royal blue and ink navy for authority with gold as the only action color, so every call to action is unmistakable and nothing else competes for it. A refined serif carries the headings and a clean sans carries the body, which is the pairing that reads as medical and premium rather than corporate and cold. Every practice detail lives in one typed configuration file. Nothing is hardcoded into a page. During the build, unresolved values rendered as visible gold TBD chips rather than placeholder text, so nobody could ever ship a fake phone number by accident. Changing the practice name in one file updates the header, the footer, and every meta tag. The navigation splits early. Patients follow conditions and what to expect. Referring physicians get their own path with a direct referral action. Both paths converge on the same two buttons, request information and refer a patient, which appear in the same position on every page.
The front end
What visitors see
- Custom design system with a tinted neutral ramp derived from the brand navy, no true gray anywhere
- Rotating hero with seven service positions and manual controls
- Separate patient and referring-provider navigation paths
- Dedicated pages for metabolic and bariatric surgery, acid reflux, robotic surgery, endoscopy, and general surgery
- Conditions library and a what-to-expect journey for pre-surgical patients
- Physician profile page built for credibility, credentials, and approach
- Full-screen mobile menu with focus trapping, escape-to-close, and close-on-navigate
- Skip-to-content link as the first tab stop on every page
- Single-source practice configuration driving header, footer, and metadata
- Server-side rendered on Cloudflare Workers, so crawlers and answer engines receive complete HTML on the first request

Results
What changed
- A specialist practice site that reads as established rather than new
- Patients and referring physicians served on separate paths that converge on the same two clear actions
- Every page fully rendered for search and answer engines with no client-side hydration gap
- Practice details editable in one file, no developer required for a phone number or an hours change
- A design system the practice can extend into new service lines without a rebuild
Common questions
Questions about the Ascend Surgical Alliance build
How long does a custom surgical practice website take to build?
Ascend went from empty repository to a complete branded site in about three weeks of focused build time, structured in phases so the practice reviewed and approved each layer before the next one started. A template would have been faster to stand up and would have taken far longer to make credible.
Do medical practice websites need a database?
Not always. Ascend ships with no database, no login, and no stored patient data, which removes an entire category of compliance and maintenance burden. When a practice later needs scheduling, intake forms, or a referral portal, the platform is built to accept that layer without a rebuild.
Why build a practice site with server-side rendering?
Search engines and AI answer engines read the HTML they receive on the first request. A client-rendered site can send an empty shell and hope the crawler waits. Server-side rendering removes that risk entirely, which matters when patients increasingly find specialists through AI search rather than a results page.
Can a single-surgeon practice compete with a hospital network site?
On design and clarity, yes, and often more effectively. Hospital network pages are built for the network, not for the surgeon. A specialist practice site can speak directly to one condition, one procedure set, and one physician, which is exactly what a patient searching for reflux surgery is looking for.

Blinds Couture
Blinds Couture came to us for a website. What shipped was a full operating system for a custom window covering business: a trade CRM, a deals pipeline, a booking engine with live availability, warranty claims, estimate-to-invoice approval, vendor document tracking, and two AI assistants, all sharing one database with the public site.
Telehealth
StemVera Health
StemVera Health is a Denver telehealth practice. The build began from an intentionally opinion-free scaffold so that every architectural and visual decision was made against the actual brand rather than inherited from a template that happened to be there first.
Clinical Wellness
Momentous Neurofeedback
Momentous Neurofeedback needed a mobile-first, server-rendered site for a treatment most prospective clients have never heard of. The build was structured in phases with the brand token system and typography locked before any page content was written.
